Crowd boos mention of Trump in losing Republican’s concession speech
Supporters of a losing Republican Senate candidate have booed Donald Trump during his concession speech.
Ralph Norman had been defeated in South Carolina’s U.S. Senate runoff that same day – beaten in the Republican primary by Senator Darline Graham, the sister of the late Senator Lindsey Graham.
Trump had thrown his weight behind Graham, although that failed to give Graham enough of an edge to avoid a run-off.
During his concession speech, Norman said that the Democratic Party had gotten what they wanted with Graham’s victory and mentioned Trump’s name, prompting boos from the crowd.
“Democrats, they got what they wanted,” Norman said. “I get that. But you know, the president got involved. He has that right. That’s his prerogative.”
Despite the crowd’s response, Norman continued to mention Trump and expressed confusion over the president’s choice to weigh in on the race.
“Well y’all, his policies are good,” he said. “I never understood why he got in this race… but it is what it is, and I’ll accept it…”
Then, Norman appeared to attempt to be optimistic.
“Something good will come out of this,” the representative said. “I don’t know what it is, but something good will come out of it.”
Norman’s defeat in the Senate primary is his second loss this year, having placed third in the Republican gubernatorial primary in June.
Graham’s campaign had received a huge amount of support from Trump, with the president even appearing at rally for her.
The commander-in-chief suggested that a vote for Graham would “go down as one of the best votes you’ve ever made for a political person.”
“I asked her to do it. I got her into this whole thing,” Trump told supporters. “I have to make sure she gets in because there will be nobody better.”
The Trump-linked Super PAC MAGA Inc. also injected $827,000 into Graham’s campaign, according to federal campaign finance filings obtained by The Associated Press.
Graham is a newcomer to politics, having taken over from her brother as one of South Carolina’s two senators after his death in July.
Lindsey Graham, who had become known as the “Trump whisperer,” often expressed an interest in foreign policy.
However, that same issue became a flashpoint in his sister’s campaign, with the incumbent senator admitting in a debate that “national security is not my thing.”
“I’m not that informed on national security,” she said.
Meanwhile, Norman described Taiwan as a “definite ally” and praised Trump for “enabling Taiwan to defend themselves against China.”
Back in 2024, Norman threw his weight behind former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley in her bid to become the Republican candidate for the presidency. Haley was subsequently beaten by Trump.
