Fish fingers, plain pasta, chips, chicken nuggets…it sounds like the staple diet of a fussy toddler.
However, many of us have never grown out of our love of so-called ‘beige food’, according to new research which has found that comforting carbs are still the go-to meal for millions.
A poll of 2,000 adults by Lurpak found that plain pasta, jacket potatoes and plain rice cakes were some of the most popular ‘bland’ foods, while Gen Z are the least likely to add extra flavour such as herbs (39 per cent) or garlic (49 per cent).
Basing your diet around foods that are pale or light brown doesn’t sound like a healthy choice, however Lily Keeling, a Registered Nutritionist and Senior Recipe Development Manager at Green Chef UK, told The Daily Mail: ‘Beige food’ often gets a bad reputation, but colour alone doesn’t determine nutritional value.
‘Many traditionally beige foods can absolutely have a place in a balanced diet. It really comes down to how they’re prepared, portion sizes, and what they’re paired with.’
Oliver Gobble, a nutritionist at Supply Life added: ‘There’s a tendency to label all beige foods as unhealthy, but nutrition is much more nuanced than that. Foods like beans, potatoes and tofu can actually be very balanced depending on how they’re prepared.’
