HAL, Safran to develop next-gen helicopter engine

New Delhi: Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) is stepping up its joint ventures with private-sector partners, announcing plans to develop a next-generation helicopter engine and manufacture avionics for helicopters and combat aircraft.

On Wednesday, the state-owned aerospace company announced a partnership with French manufacturer Safran to develop a new-generation helicopter engine for its upcoming Indian Multi-Role Helicopter (IMRH). The engine has been selected for IMRH, which is expected to eventually replace the Russian-origin Mi-17 fleet. The same day, HAL chairman and managing director Ravi K inaugurated manufacturing facilities of its JV with Samtel, which will produce avionics for helicopters, including Light Combat Helicopters, and develop next-generation electronic systems for aircraft. For helicopter engines, HAL’s joint venture SAFHAL Helicopter Engines Pvt Ltd will develop a 3,500-4,000 shaft horsepower engine named Aravalli. “Through this collaborative programme with SAFHAL and Safran Helicopter Engines, we are creating a strong foundation for powering next-generation Indian helicopter platforms,” said Ravi K.

The project involves an investment of over ₹4,000 crore in research and development over seven years, including testing, certification and integration of the engine on the next-generation IMRH.
