Hollywood director Michael Mann, 83, rushed to hospital after accidentally shooting himself at LA gun range

Hollywood director and producer Michael Mann has been rushed to hospital after accidentally shooting himself whilst at a gun range.

The film-maker, 83, was at a gun range in Los Angeles when the incident occurred on Saturday afternoon at around 4pm.

A source told TMZ that Mann, best known for his 1995 film Heat, was trying to holster his firearm when the weapon fired and he was shot in the leg.

He was taken to hospital in an ambulance, while police and fire crews were in attendance.

Police confirmed to TMZ that the incident took place at The Range LA, a members-only indoor shooting club in the west of the city.

The gun range typically caters to Hollywood elites, studio executives and high-profile actors, with annual memberships starting from around $3,000 to $20,000, according to The Mirror.

The police report added that Mann did not purposely shoot himself, and was ‘injured during a training accident when he accidentally discharged a firearm into his own leg’.

Mann’s publicist told Daily Mail: ‘On Saturday, at a gun range, a weapon accidentally discharged while holstered resulting in a superficial injury to film director Michael Mann. He was treated and is being released.’

Mann has directed a series of major films, including Manhunter (1986), The Last of the Mohicans (1992), Ali (2001) and Collateral (2004).

The director, producer and screenwriter has received four Academy Award nominations in his career, but has never won an Oscar.

His most recent film was the 2023 release Ferrari, starring Adam Driver and Penelope Cruz.

He is currently working on a long-awaited prequel to Heat, with an all-star cast already recruited.

Last month Variety reported that Adolescence star Stephen Grahan has joined the project alongside Leonardo DiCaprio, Christian Bale, Adam Driver, Jason Clarke and Odessa Young.

While roles haven’t been confirmed, Graham is rumored to be playing a younger version of Neil McCauley, portrayed by Robert De Niro in the 1995 original.

Bale is reportedly lined up for the role of LA detective Vincent Hanna, played by Al Pacino, and DiCaprio is expected to play Val Kilmer’s character and Chris Shiherlis.

In 2022 Mann published a 500-page novel titled Heat 2 that he co-authored with thriller writer Meg Gardiner, which became a New York Times best-seller.

Mann has written the screenplay from the novel and will also direct as well as having a producer credit alongside Jerry Bruckheimer.
