If your jewellery collection has been feeling a little predictable lately, autumn is a good excuse to switch things up. Rather than one overarching look dominating the season, jewellery is becoming much more personal, with statement pieces, playful charms and unexpected combinations all having a moment.

That’s according to Ruby Beales, Buying Manager at Liberty, who has had a front-row seat to the latest jewellery shifts. Earlier this month, the department store launched its new Fashion Jewellery Gallery, bringing together 37 brands, including eight new names and 11 exclusive to Liberty.

The edit spans Copenhagen-based Kinraden, Antwerp jewellery house Wouters & Hendrix and French jewellery favourite Gas Bijoux, alongside established names including Daisy London, Otiumberg and Missoma.

So, what are shoppers actually looking for this autumn? According to Beales, it’s less about subscribing to one particular trend and more about finding pieces that feel like you.

‘The overall mood for autumn is less about following one prescriptive jewellery trend and more about personality,’ she says. ‘Whether that’s an oversized earring, a charm collected on holiday or a silver piece layered alongside an old gold ring, the most interesting jewellery now tells you something about the person wearing it.’

Here are the six jewellery trends she’s expecting to see everywhere this autumn…

1. Statement earrings

The statement earring is making a comeback – and this season, bigger is definitely better. Rather than delicate, barely-there styles, look out for sculptural shapes and unexpected silhouettes that can do the heavy lifting when it comes to an outfit.

‘Earrings are getting bigger again for autumn, and I think that comes from a wider appetite for jewellery with personality,’ says Beales. ‘A great statement earring can completely transform knitwear or tailoring, so it’s an easy way to make an autumn wardrobe feel new.’

The key is to look for something with a little more personality than a traditional chandelier. Think abstract shapes, oversized proportions and designs that feel slightly unexpected.

2. Modern pearls

Forget everything you thought you knew about pearls. This season, they’re being given a much less traditional treatment, with designers playing with scale, asymmetry and unconventional settings.

‘Pearls are moving further away from their traditionally polished reputation,’ says Beales. ‘The most interesting versions now play with scale, asymmetry and unusual settings, which makes them feel much less formal.’

The result is a pearl that feels just as at home with a chunky knit or leather jacket as it does with something more dressed up. Beales’ styling trick? ‘I love them mixed with harder metals or worn in a way that feels deliberately imperfect.’

3. Charms and trinkets

The charm necklace has officially moved beyond its Y2K associations. This time around, it’s less about buying a pre-styled piece and more about building a collection that actually means something to you.

‘The charm trend is really about making jewellery personal,’ says Beales. ‘Rather than buying one finished piece, customers are building necklaces slowly with initials, talismans, lockets and objects that mean something to them.’

It’s a trend that rewards a little patience, too. FoundRae and Marie Lichtenberg are two names Beales highlights for their highly symbolic designs – the kind of pieces that can become more personal the longer you own them.

4. Colour and resin

If your autumn wardrobe tends to veer towards black, brown, grey and camel, colourful jewellery is one of the easiest ways to inject some personality without overhauling your entire wardrobe.

‘Colour is a great counterpoint to an autumn wardrobe,’ says Beales. ‘We’re seeing bold resin, enamel and coloured stones used almost like punctuation against simple clothes.’

And you don’t need to go all-out with a rainbow of accessories. In fact, the beauty of this trend is in the restraint. ‘It doesn’t need to mean lots of colour at once – one strong earring, cuff or ring can be enough,’ she adds.

5. Sculptural silver

After years of yellow gold dominating jewellery edits, silver is feeling fresh again – particularly when it comes in bold, architectural forms rather than delicate chains.

‘Silver has a freshness to it again, particularly in really clean, architectural shapes,’ says Beales. She points to Kinraden as a standout example, with the Copenhagen brand’s pared-back designs still managing to make an impact.

‘After such a long period dominated by yellow gold, that cooler metal feels very modern,’ she adds.

Consider this your sign to dig out your silver jewellery box – or, if you’ve never really been a silver person, to give it another look.

6. Mixed metals

The days of agonising over whether your jewellery is all gold or all silver are officially behind us. This autumn, there’s much more freedom to mix the two – and, perhaps more importantly, to combine new pieces with the jewellery you already own.

‘The old rule about choosing either gold or silver has completely disappeared,’ says Beales. ‘Customers are much more comfortable mixing the two, particularly alongside jewellery they already own.’

It’s a styling trick that instantly makes a jewellery collection feel more eclectic and considered, rather than as though everything was bought at the same time.

‘It makes a collection feel more individual and much less styled,’ she adds.
