Newborn baby is found dead in a garbage bin – as cops urgently search for his mother

Police are urgently appealing for information after a newborn baby was found dead inside a garbage bin in Sydney’s west on Monday.

Emergency services attended a unit block along Harrow Road, Auburn at around 11.20am on Monday following reports that the body of a baby had been located in a private bin. 

It’s understood the baby is a boy. 

Police have established a crime scene and Auburn detectives have commenced an investigation into the incident.

Police hold serious concerns for the welfare of the baby’s mother and have urged her to attend her nearest hospital to receive urgent care.

Auburn Police Area Commander, Detective Acting Superintendent Darren Sly said the baby’s body was discovered by a local resident.

‘The baby was located by a local community member who was… putting rubbish inside the bins this morning,’ Acting Superintendent Sly told reporters on Monday afternoon.

‘It’s very traumatic for that particular lady.’

While it’s unclear if the baby was delivered alive, Acting Supt. Sly said police believe the baby could have been inside the bein for up to 36 hours.

‘Examinations are to be undertaken,’ he said. ‘It’s sad, it’s horrific set of circumstances.’

He confirmed police are still unaware of the identity of both the mother and newborn.
