Travellers warned as lightning strike closes runway at Brisbane Airport

Delays have affected flights at Brisbane Airport after a lightning strike damaged part of the runway.

The airport advised its western runway was closed for repair following the lightning strike at 3.11pm AEST on Tuesday and would remain closed overnight.

‘The eastern runway has just reopened following a safety inspection,’ it said in a statement.

‘Some delays to flights are expected, with further storm activity likely.’

A Brisbane Airport spokesman told The Daily Mail flights had only suffered minor delays due to heightened traffic on the one operational runway and ongoing weather.

‘All flights have continued to operate on the eastern runway while the western runway is undergoing repairs,’ he said.

Repairs on the western runway are expected to be complete by Wednesday morning for ‘business as usual’.

Travellers were advised to check for their latest flight information through their airline.
