Taliban arrests militant who shot 25-year-old girl

Al-Jazeera TV reported that a Taliban gunman was arrested after he shot and killed 25-year-old Zainab Abdullah, and her family was offered 600,000 Afghanis (about $5,700).

The incident took place on January 13 in Dasht-e Barashi, a metropolitan area inhabited mainly by Shiite Hazaras. The area has been repeatedly attacked by many extremist groups.

Taliban spokesman Mohammad Naeem said the killing was a mistake and the captured fighter would be punished.

After Zainab’s murder, a wave of protests for women’s rights swept the country, who said they were afraid to leave the house. The Taliban fired tear gas at some of them.

Since coming to power in August 2021, the Taliban have imposed a number of restrictions on women, including restricting girls’ ability to attend school, requiring television presenters to wear headscarves, and recommending local television channels refrain from showing films depicting women.
It also became known that the Taliban forbade the treatment of women who come to the doctor without a man.
