6 UN employees kidnapped in southern Yemen

Journalists in the Yemeni News Agency, quoting sources, reported that unidentified gunmen kidnapped six United Nations employees in southern Yemen.

Al-Shabab news agency stated, “According to local sources, six United Nations employees, including a Bulgarian and five Yemenis, were kidnapped by unidentified gunmen … in Abyan governorate.”

Russell Geekie, Senior Communications Adviser to the United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator in Yemen, told Xinhua that the kidnapping took place on the road to the city of Aden, where the organization’s staff were returning after work.

He stressed that “the United Nations is in close contact with the authorities to secure their release (UN staff).”
