Macron thanks the candidates who withdrew and called to vote for him

French President Emmanuel Macron thanked the candidates who withdrew after the first round of the presidential election, urging them to vote for him.

“I thank Anne Hidalgo, Yannick Gadot, Valérie Pecres and Fabien Roussel, who gave me their support tonight,” Macron said.

Earlier, several candidates for the presidency of France called for a vote for Macron. They include centre-right Republican candidate Valerie Pecresse, Socialist leader and Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo and Green Party leader Yannick Gadot.

The leader of the French Communist Party, Fabien Roussel, has not officially expressed his support for Macron, but has called on his supporters to vote against the leader of the right-wing National Rally, Marine Le Pen.

Jean-Luc Melenchon, leader of the left-wing opposition movement France, expressed a similar position.

On Sunday, France held the first round of the presidential elections. With nearly 40% of the votes counted, Marine Le Pen was in the lead – she had the support of 28.2% of voters. Macron received 26.15% of the vote.

At the same time, an Ifop poll showed that Macron would win the second round of elections on April 24 with 51% of the vote. And Le Pen, according to the results of the poll, will get 49% of the vote.
