The illustrator of Marilyn Monroe’s original 1962 dress, fashion designer Bob Mackie, was unhappy with Kim Kardashian’s appearance on the red carpet at the Met Gala.

“I think it was a big mistake,” Mackie said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “[Marilyn] was a goddess. A crazy goddess, but a goddess. She was just gorgeous. No one was photographed like her. And this dress was made for her. There was no one else to be seen in it.”

Mackie also shared historians’ concerns that Monroe’s dress may have been damaged by Kardashian’s wearing the dress. These rare things are usually stored in museums under glass.

Fashion designer Bob Mackie was only 23 years old when he painted the dress under the guidance of designer Jean-Louis.
