Footy star fell from a pub ROOF as fresh details emerge on events that led to him being placed in induced coma

An Australian Rules footballer and former top junior tennis star has been placed in an induced coma after he suffered ‘life changing injuries’ when he fell through the roof of a pub.

Sam May of SANFL club West Adelaide suffered the injuries at the Pier Hotel in Port Lincoln, South Australia in the early hours of Sunday morning, according to 7News.

It was not until later Sunday morning, when he failed to show up at the airport for the team’s trip back to Adelaide, that teammates noticed he was missing and a club official went back to the pub and found him with severe injuries.

The incident occurred after the Bloods played a SANFL game against Norwood at Centenary Oval.

The family of the injured player thanked club doctor Megan Deakin, who was one of the first people on the scene to assist the stricken player.

May, 24, was appointed as part of the leadership group at West Adelaide this year.

A former student at prestigious Prince Alfred College, May had also been an accomplished tennis player and was ranked number three in the country as a junior.

He studied law and commerce at university.

May’s family also released a statement thanking supporters for helping them through a difficult time.

‘We are truly grateful for the incredible care our beautiful boy received in Port Lincoln (before) being transferred to Adelaide and now in the RAH,’ his family said in a statement.

‘He has been blessed to be surrounded by such caring, clever people. Our special thanks also to club doctor Megan Deakin, who was one of the first responders in assisting Sam.

‘We are forever grateful that his loyal Westies family and the beautiful Heard family were by his side.

‘Sammy is the light of our lives and we absolutely love and adore him as does everyone who is lucky enough to meet him. As awful and as difficult it is, we just need to wait now.

‘Your love, strength and prayers for our Sammy are appreciated beyond measure. We have always been so incredibly proud of Sammy, for all that he has achieved and the fabulous young man he is; he’s always been such an inspiration.

‘We all know he has the heart of a lion and an amazingly brave spirit. He will be doing everything he can to get back to his best. Sincere thanks and much love.

‘Sue, Daz, Tom and Sam.’
