Vuelta: Demi Vollering takes the last stage and the general classification, two French women in the top 5
She has not lost her path to victory. Weaned from success since the start of the season, Demi Vollering (SD Worx-Protime) dominated the other favorites of the Vuelta and won her second Grand Tour after the Tour de France 2023, Sunday May 5 at the end of the eighth and last stage arriving at Valdesqui station, in the Madrid region.
Second last year, behind her compatriot Annemiek Van Vleuten, now retired, Demi Vollering dominated all the mountain stages of this tenth edition. She had often come close to victory this season without ever being rewarded: second in the Flèche Wallonne and the Flèche Brabançonne, third in Liège-Bastogne-Liège and the Strade Bianche. An anomaly for the one who had no less than 17 victories in 2023.
Demi Vollering finally put things back in order, winning at the top of the Alto del Fuerte Rapitan on the fifth stage to take the leader’s red jersey, then on Sunday in Valdesqui on the final stage, carmine tunic on his shoulders . Riejanne Markus (Visma-Lease a bike) and Elisa Longo Borghini (Lidl-Trek), relegated to almost two minutes, complete the podium in the general classification.
The Frenchwoman Evita Muzic (FDJ-Suez), second in the final stage, also distinguished herself on the Spanish roads. She signed a prestigious victory at the top of the Laguna Negra on the sixth stage in front of Demi Vollering, her second victory in a Grand Tour after that in the 2020 Giro. She finished in fifth place in the final general classification, better than the last year (6th in the 2023 Vuelta), just behind Juliette Labous (dsm-firmenich PostNL)another very regular Tricolor all week.
The Netherlands won everything: in addition to the red and polka dot jerseys of Demi Vollering, the points classification went to her compatriot Marianne Vos (Visma-Lease a bike) who won two stages, and the best team is the SD Worx-Protime, Dutch team of Demi Vollering. The winner of the 2023 Vélo d’or should skip the Giro to prepare for the Olympic Games and the defense of her yellow jersey in the Tour de France Femmes in August.
