Deputy Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs: Egypt hosts 9 million foreigners and more than 570,000 refugees and asylum seekers

Ambassador Dr. Wael Badawi, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Migration, Refugees, and Combating Human Trafficking, on behalf of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, at the high-level ministerial conference on migration and comprehensive partnership, which was held in the Danish capital, Copenhagen, on May 6, 2024.

This, Danish Prime Minister Mina Frederiksen opened the conference in the presence of Minister of International Cooperation and Climate Policy Dan Jørgensen, as well as the European Commissioner for Migration and the Ministers of Interior and Immigration from a number of African and European countries, in addition to Egyptian Ambassador Karim Sharif, where they discussed strengthening Partnerships to combat illegal immigration, smuggling and human trafficking, and the most prominent challenges facing countries hosting large numbers of refugees. The conference also witnessed the participation of various international experiences, practices and efforts to reduce illegal immigration, smuggling and human trafficking. 

 

In this context, Ambassador Dr. Wael Badawi gave a speech in which he referred to the great efforts made by Egypt in hosting nearly 9 million foreigners and more than 570,000 refugees and asylum seekers from about 133 countries, all of whom enjoy all available services, including health and education, on an equal basis with Egyptian citizens, which comes in… The framework for implementing “Egypt Vision 2030”, which aims to improve the standard of living of all Egyptian residents, whether citizens, immigrants, or refugees, despite the economic challenges that Egypt is going through that are linked to global economic circumstances and situations.

 

In connection with this, the Ambassador confirmed Dr. Wael Badawi stressed that Egypt is following a comprehensive approach in dealing with the immigration issue, focusing on addressing the root causes of illegal immigration, and developing legal and regular immigration methods to protect immigrants and refugees from smugglers and human traffickers, through coordination and international cooperation, stressing the importance of establishing international partnerships at the bilateral level. With various partner countries, as well as at the multilateral level with international institutions. In this regard, he pointed out that one of the most prominent agreements recently signed is the comprehensive strategic partnership agreement that was signed between Egypt and the European Union in Cairo in March 2024, which includes 6 main components in several fields, one of which focuses in particular on developing cooperation. Ambassador Dr. Wael Badawi also stressed Egypt’s adherence to its international obligations and national legislation with regard to combating illegal immigration and human trafficking, and its keenness to raise awareness of the seriousness of the crime. Human trafficking, the risks facing illegal immigrants, and its endeavor, in cooperation with its international partners, to create job opportunities for them in their countries, and to effectively contribute to the processes of their reintegration into their communities.
