Tottenham prepare new bid for Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke – who is valued at £70m by Seagulls

Tottenham are formulating a new offer for Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke after their opening bid was rejected.
Brighton value the 25-year-old Netherlands international at close to £70million but he only has one year left on his contract.
Liverpool discussed a potential £35m move for him last summer when they held parallel discussions with Crystal Palace for Marc Guehi. They retain an interest but have priorities elsewhere despite losing Ibrahima Konate, who is joining Real Madrid for free.
Chelsea also hold an interest but Van Hecke is well-known to Roberto de Zerbi after he played under the Tottenham coach during his time in charge of Brighton.
That dynamic will attract the defender to the move but Spurs need to get closer to Brighton’s valuation.
Tottenham have already signed Marco Senesi at centre back from Bournemouth on a free with the expectation that Cristian Romero will be sold.

Andy Robertson has also joined from Liverpool and they are working on a deal for Manchester City winger Savinho, as revealed by Daily Mail Sport last month.
Van Hecke started for the Netherlands in their friendly against Algeria in Rotterdam last night which they lost 1-0.
