Britain’s Amy Hunt recorded a season’s best time as she took third in a high-quality 200m final at the Diamond League Final in Brussels.

St Lucia’s Olympic 200m silver medallist and 100m champion Julien Alfred won her third Diamond League crown in 21.79s, with American Kayla White second in 22 flat and European champion Hunt third in 22.16. Fellow Brit Success Eduan was seventh.

Hunt said afterwards: “I’m really really proud of that one.

“That was probably one of the best bends I’ve ever done, if not the best. I could feel I was so close to Julien, then the long season kind of caught up to me in the last 20 metres.”

Earlier on Friday, the first night of the two-day meet, Jakob Ingebrigsten was fourth in a chaotic men’s 1,500m final with 20-year-old Australian talent Cam Myers taking victory from Phanuel Kipkosgei Koech.

Ingebrigsten, who has had a difficult season following 5,000m gold in the European Championships as he continues his comeback from a long injury layoff, led from the start.

He moved early to follow the pacemakers with the rest of the field, led by rival and Olympic champion Cole Hocker, quick to move up onto his shoulder.

The field went through the 800m in 1.52 flat before the pacemakers peeled off, leading to a free-for-all approaching the final couple of hundred metres.

Australia’s Myers was boxed in going into the final bend while Ingebrigtsen continued to lead. But the Norwegian great was closed down in the home straight, while Myers snuck through a gap on the inside – in a move reminiscent of Hocker’s in the Paris Olympic final – and charged away.

Koech, third-placed Ethan Strand and Ingebrigtsen all recorded season’s bests of 3:30.18, 3:30.50 and 3:30.52 respectively.

American Hocker only had enough for seventh place, while Britain’s Jake Heyward was eighth.

Earlier on Friday world and Olympic champion Mondo Duplantis pulled out of the pole vault event citing muscle tightness during the warm-up.

His rival Emmanouil Karalis capitalised on his absence, setting a new meeting record of 6.12m to win the Diamond League crown.

Oblique Seville won the men’s 100m in 9.90s from Emmanuel Eseme, with Kayinsole Ajayi of Nigeria third, while Botswana’s Busang Collen Kebinatshipi stormed to a new national and Diamond League record of 43.40 in an electric men’s 400m.

Jereem Richards was second in a new national record of 43.68 for Trinidad and Tobago, with Britain’s Matt Hudson-Smith fifth.
