Iran’s Supreme Leader warns US has no safe place as truce violation triggers fresh tensions in Middle East
Iran’s foreign ministry said US strikes in Hormozgan province represented a “gross violation” of a tenuous ceasefire in place for nearly seven weeks. The US military characterised the strikes as defensive, saying targets included missile launch sites and boats placing mines, insisting they acted with “restraint… to protect our troops from threats posed by Iranian forces.” Tehran warned Washington would bear responsibility for “all consequences. The Islamic Republic of Iran will leave no act of aggression unanswered.” The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it fired at an F-35 jet and drones.
Rubio has said the Strait of Hormuz had to be open “one way or the other.” Tehran, meanwhile, wants release of around $24 billion of Iranian funds frozen overseas as part of the memorandum of understanding.
In comments on Telegram for Haj, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khomenei said, “The clock cannot be turned back, and nations and lands of the region will no longer be a shield for American bases. From now on, the slogans ‘Death to America’ and ‘Death to Israel’ will be the slogans of the Islamic nation and oppressed people of the world, especially the youth.”
US President Donald Trump has called on more Arab and Muslim states to sign the Abraham Accords. Global benchmark Brent crude oil rose almost 3% on Tuesday to $98.91.
Trump has said his key aim in the war is to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon with its highly enriched uranium.
