Michael Carrick latest: Under-fire manager arrives for training despite being left in dark after club chiefs hold crisis talks

Michael Carrick fights on as Man United manager after surviving crisis talks

Carrick had appeared to be on the brink of the sack following the 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth on Sunday and technical director Jason Wilcox and CEO Omar Berrada met to discuss his future at the club’s Carrington training ground and sound out potential replacements.

Carrick then arrived at the training ground shortly before 2pm on Monday afternoon, just in time to watch the club’s Under-21s play a behind-closed-doors match against Hull, before he left Carrington a few hours later.

But the popular former midfielder – who was backed by the United supporters at Old Trafford despite the abject defeat to Bournemouth – remains in charge and is continuing to prepare for this weekend’s trip to Chelsea in the Premier League as usual. United’s first-team squad will be back at Carrington for training on Tuesday, which is expected to be led by Carrick.

That’s despite United’s hierarchy reportedly sounding out potential replacements for Carrick if they are required to appoint a fourth permanent manager in the three years since the minority Ineos ownership took control of football operations from the Glazers.

What comes next for Carrick and Man Utd?

Beyond training, Carrick appears set to continue in the job as normal, preparing for Chelsea on Saturday.

But The Athletic reports that crunch talks over Carrick’s future are ongoing and involve Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Joel and Avram Glazer, Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox.

Clearly, there is disagreement over the immediate direction of the club.

Carrick arrives for Man Utd training

Michael Carrick has arrived at Carrington to take Manchester United training.

It appears to be another day, at least, in the job for Carrick, despite the pressure and speculation linking Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann with his job.

Should United opt for Howe, then Newcastle would be due compensation, which may alter United’s thinking when pushing for a successor to Carrick.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos put up Swiss club for sale after Man Utd crisis deepens

Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos have put up Swiss club Lausanne for sale with the minority Man Utd shareholder under intense pressure as the latest crisis at Old Trafford deepens.

The Swiss Super League club, which was also the INEOS global headquarters from 2010 to 2016, is on the market, reports The Athletic.

But with Lausanne now up for sale, Ratcliffe’s sporting ambition appears to be crumbling.

Sponsorship deals with the All Blacks (New Zealand, rugby union) and Tottenham Hotspur in 2025 have occurred, while French club OGC Nice is also on the market.

United supporters are disgruntled at the way Ratcliffe has run the sporting side of the club since purchasing a stake from the Glazer family.

Man United’s problems are much bigger than Michael Carrick – and much harder to fix

There was a time, not too long ago, when Michael Carrick was the answer for Manchester United. He seemed to have the answers, too. Now he is stumped in his search for them. “Certainly, to get to this point, is there’s a lot of questions to find the answers to,” he said.

And this point may be the end point: 16th in the Premier League, 20th in the Champions League, eight games without a win after back-to-back thrashings at the hands of small clubs. Carrick, who had the best record in the Premier League last season after his January appointment, stands on the brink of the sack. Carrick’s regime has crumbled at startling speed, with brutal cruelty to a fundamentally decent man with a genuine affection for the club.

Possible replacements for Michael Carrick: Julian Nagelsmann?

The former wunderkind of German coaching was reportedly on United’s radar when they sacked Ruben Amorim at the start of the year, but as an option for the summer following the World Cup. Well, that was a bit of a disaster for the former Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig coach, as Germany were knocked out in the last-32 by Paraguay. Nagelsmann, 39, would naturally be interested in managing United and the club’s director of recruitment, Christopher Vivell, previously worked with him at Red Bull.

Carrick set to begin preparation for Chelsea clash

Carrick was spotted driving away from Carrington with his son Jacey shortly before 6pm.

The Man Utd boss could stumble on, despite speculation that the club is agonising over which, between Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann, to hire as his replacement.

With four days before a trip to Chelsea, United begin their preparations, with Carrick, for the time being.

Carrick poised to take Man Utd training

Good morning, it’s another day, just about, for Michael Carrick in the job as Manchester United manager.

With the players due back at training this morning, it appears as if Carrick will lead the group once more.

We’ll bring you the latest this morning, with Carrick due back at Carrington in the next hour.

Possible replacements for Michael Carrick: Eddie Howe?

The Englishman is available after his shock decision to leave Newcastle United in the summer. Howe told the club he needed a break from management but the chance to take charge at Old Trafford, three months later, would surely be too good to turn down if an offer arrives.

The 48-year-old remains highly regarded in English football, and is reportedly the preferred candidate of the United technical director Jason Wilcox, after taking over a Newcastle side in the relegation zone and leading them to the club’s highest Premier League finish in two decades, as well as their first domestic silverware in 70 years.

Howe twice took Newcastle into the Champions League playing an energetic, high-intensity style of football that would be popular at Old Trafford.

He is currently the favourite with the bookies.

Man Utd’s permanent managers under Ineos

Manchester United would be left searching for a fourth permanent manager in three years under the minority ownership of Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos, should they part ways with Michael Carrick. Ineos took control of the club’s football operations when they bought into the club during the 2023/24 season.

  • Ruben Amorim: November 2024 – January 2026
