Turkey bans Russian ships from crossing the Bosphorus strait

The Turkish authorities did not allow three Russian ships to pass through the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles.

“Turkey demanded that Russia cancel the request to pass through the straits for ships that are not part of the Black Sea Fleet,” Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said.

According to him, the Russian side agreed to this requirement.

On February 28, Cavusoglu said that Ankara had warned all coastal and landlocked countries that it would not allow warships to pass through the Bosphorus and Dardanelles due to the operation carried out by the Russian Armed Forces in Ukraine.

Turkey is bound by the Montreux Convention, according to which warships of non-Black Sea countries can stay in the Black Sea for no more than three weeks. In emergency situations, Turkey, if it is not a party to an armed conflict, has the right to ban or restrict passage through the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles.
