The US urges Finland and Sweden to join NATO as soon as possible

NATO expects Sweden and Finland to make their own decisions about potential NATO membership in the coming months and weeks. This came during a briefing by the US Representative to NATO, Julian Smith.

“We have to wait and see what decision these two sovereign states will take in the coming weeks and months,” she said.

According to Smith, the United States welcomes the decision of Finland and Sweden to join the alliance and believes that these two countries are indeed important partners of NATO today. The US ambassador stressed that both countries have great capabilities in the military-technical field.

The Russian military operation in Ukraine forced countries with a neutral status – Finland and Sweden – to seriously consider becoming a member of NATO.

According to a study by the state radio station Yle, which was conducted from March 9 to 11 in Finland, the country’s accession to the alliance was supported by 62% of respondents – this is a record.
