GAME AND FIRST SET! Jakub Mensik 6-4 Joao Fonseca

Mensik serves for the set. There’s a bit of murmuring from the crowd as he takes his time swiping clay off the baseline between serves, and as he nets for 30-15 the Brazilian contingent roar their support until the umpire quietens them down.

The Czech’s defence is peerless at the moment though and he somehow escapes in the next rally, but a wild backhand lets Fonseca back in for 40-30.

Still set point… and he takes the second with a forehand into the open court.

A 28-shot rally is exactly what this crowd came to see, a brutal baseline exchange with Mensik somehow hooking a lob out of nowhere – and the Czech outlasts Fonseca, who goes long!

Some tidy serving and another forehand error by the 19-year-old, and Mensik wraps up the hold.

BREAK! *Jakub Mensik 3-2 Joao Fonseca

In theory the roof being closed on Chatrier should favour Mensik’s flatter ballstriking, but Fonseca is largely coming out on top of the rallies, putting the Czech on the defensive before planting a vicious forehand cross-court.

But Mensik digs out a drop shot and palms a lovely volley out of the Brazilian’s reach, before Fonseca goes long and suddenly the Czech has two break points…

The first is saved as Mensik nets – but then Fonseca goes wide and the Czech gets first blood!

So far Mensik has been somewhat outclassed, pushed and pulled around at will but some fine serving gives him some breathing room – until a loose backhand and a venture to the net brings up deuce.

Fonseca lunges for the ball and can’t keep it in – but then Mensik nets and it’s back to deuce.

The Czech ventures to the net again and this time it’s more successful as the ball dies away.

Now Fonseca fires long on one of the longest rallies so far, and Mensik holds.

A couple of loose errors from Fonseca brings up 0-30, and a murmur of concern ripples around Chatrier.

He responds with a whip-smart forehand and gets Mensik on the run in the next rally, blasting down a smash to dig himself out of trouble. A roar from the Brazilian as Mensik can only palm his next serve into the net, and he holds as Mensik is forced out wide again.

The crowd shows their appreciation as Mensik goes for the drop shot, but Fonseca digs it out – only for Mensik to fire a lovely, sharply angled volley cross-court.

The Czech is looking a little tight in these early exchanges though and nets twice in succession, the second time with an open court at his mercy.

A booming ace down the T gets him back to 30-30. Another ace, and Fonseca finds the net to get the 20-year-old on the board.
