Nathan Lyon injured during day five of Australia v England Test at Adelaide Oval

Nathan Lyon is likely to take no further part in the Ashes after injuring his hamstring while fielding on the final day of the third Test in Adelaide.

As Australia searched for wickets in pursuit of an Ashes victory, Lyon clutched at his right hamstring after fielding a ball at fine leg on Sunday. He will take no further part in the match.

The spinner, who’d taken 3-77 off 25 overs in England’s second innings, walked off the field after throwing the ball back.

Marnus Labuschagne had a brief conversation with Lyon as he walked towards the dressing room and patted the off-spinner on the back.

“Nathan Lyon has suffered a hamstring injury and will take no further part in this match,” read a Cricket Australia statement.

West Australian Corey Rocchiccioli, Tasmanian tweaker Matt Kuhnemann and Victorian Todd Murphy loom as spin options if Lyon cannot play the fourth Test, starting on Boxing Day at the MCG.

Rocchiccioli, a right-arm off-spinner, has 20 Sheffield Shield wickets this summer at an average 28, after taking 38 wickets last summer. Murphy and Kuhnemann have played Tests for Australia in India and Sri Lanka.

Lyon injured his calf in the second Test of the 2023 Ashes series at Lord’s and took no further part in the series. Australia won that Test to go 2-0 up but failed to win a series that ended in a 2-2 draw.
