Gallen fumes as NRL admits error in explosive clash

The NRL has given the match review committee a clip for not charging Penrith centre Taylan May over his head clash that left Reece Walsh with a facial fracture.

But league great Paul Gallen is furious at suggestions May should have been fined or suspended for what he deemed accidental contact.

May rushed out of the defensive line during Thursday night’s grand final rematch to put pressure on ball-barrier Walsh.

The Panthers player was criticised by some commentators for not lowering his body, resulting in a head clash which split Walsh’s face open and was later revealed to have broken a bone as well.

May was penalised and placed on report but he was given no charge by the independent MRC the following day.

It left Broncos coach Kevin Walters fuming.

“I’m a bit confused about the rules. Where is the duty of care for our players?” Walters told media on Friday.

“Reece will miss four to six weeks. There was contact to the head.”
