Danielle Whittaker dead after drug overdose on the Gold Coast

Tributes have flowed for Danielle Whittaker, the ‘passionate’ and ‘trustworthy’ woman who died of a drug overdose on Good Friday.

Celebrating her 40th birthday on the Gold Coast with six close friends on Friday, Whittaker ingested a cocktail of drugs that sent her into cardiac arrest.

Despite desperate attempts from paramedics, she could not be revived. Two of her friends were also taken to hospital.

Friends and family have flooded her social media pages, with one woman calling Whittaker ‘the best of friends’.

‘The best of friends, loyal, trustworthy, a friend in all seasons, keeper of secrets,’ she wrote.

‘You were always there for me, for all of us. So full of energy and the joy of life.

‘You were carpe diem and no f**ks given and go for it.

‘You busted myths and stood up for the oppressed, lifted heavy s**t, laughed out loud and raged at the world, you cooked up a storm and created them.

‘Entrepreneurial, creative, passionate, endless energy and joy for life.’

She said Whittaker had been ‘fearless and invincible’ and there would ‘never be another you’.

Another friend said Whittaker was ‘so loved and missed’ and she was ‘absolutely devastated’, since the pair were meant to celebrate their 40th birthdays together.

‘You were a force to reckon with, and had so many amazing plans to help so many people,’ she wrote.

‘Kind, courageous, sensitive, hilarious, fierce, upfront, honest (blunt!), all of those things and so much more – it has been one hell of a ride and I am so bloody lucky to have known you, let alone call you a close friend.’

Known as a ‘Shamanic medicine woman’ on her social media, Whittaker proudly worked to ‘build an army of courageous, empowered, soul driven women who are here to create change and make magic’.

Her work revolved around New Age spirituality.

Emergency services were called to the Surfers Paradise unit on the Gold Coast just after 11pm on Friday, after it was reported that a woman was unconscious.

Queensland Ambulance Service Inspector Mitch Ware said paramedics identified seven patients at the scene, including the deceased 40-year-old woman and two others who were rushed to the Gold Coast University Hospital.

‘Upon our arrival, there were seven patients identified, three of which were being critical, one of which was in cardiac arrest at the time,’ he said.

‘Unfortunately, despite specialists attempts on scene which included our High Acuity Response Unit, that patient was unable to be revived at the scene and was declared deceased.’

As of Monday morning, one person remains in hospital in a stable condition, while the other has since been released.

Four other women were also assessed, however did not require treatment.

Mr Ware said paramedics were ‘frequently’ responding to increasing incidents involving recreational drugs, and delivered a sobering warning against the act.

‘I want to start off by paying my condolences to the family of the 40-year-old female who lost her life (but) I won’t sugar coat it – there is no such thing as a safe drug, there is no such thing as a party drug,’ he said.

‘When people are obviously buying these drugs there is an element of risk. You don’t know what’s going into them, you don’t know who’s made them.’

Police will carry out a toxicology report to identify the cocktail of drugs used, and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
