Slater demands 'accountability' after Benji miracle

League legend Billy Slater has called for “accountability” for an anonymous source who tried to derail new Wests Tigers coach Benji Marshall on the eve of their NRL season.

And he’s pinpointed one moment from Monday’s epic win over Parramatta to highlight how the perennial also-rans have turned a corner after a decade in top-eight wilderness.

Marshall – a 2005 premiership hero with the club – was jettisoned into the hot seat late last year when veteran coach Tim Sheens was effectively pushed out.

His full-time tenure began in dire fashion with a 32-12 loss to Canberra in round two, having had a bye to start the season.

Marshall was forced to defend himself before the Raiders game when a News Corp article accused him of being a part-time coach and not putting enough work in.

The Sydney Morning Herald revealed the source of the story was believed to be disgruntled former Tigers recruitment manager Scott Fulton, who had butted heads with Marshall and ultimately lost his job at Concord.

The Tigers have since scored back-to-back wins, thrashing the Sharks before beating the Eels by a field goal in an Easter Monday thriller.
