Iran’s attack on Israel: MEP Bernard Guetta judges "maddening the spiral into which we have just entered"

“What is completely frightening is the spiral into which we have just entered”reacts Sunday April 14 on France Inter Bernard Guetta, Renew Europe MEP, after Iran’s attack on Israel overnight. Bernard Guetta believes that after these Iranian strikes “we are on the verge of an escalation” In the region. “The ball is in the Israeli court”he adds.
The MEP expects a response from the Jewish state. “It is hard to imagine that the Israelis would not want to retaliate against this, despite the quasi-veto of the United States”. He thus fears “that the Israelis seize the opportunity and try to strike the facilities participating in the Iranian nuclear program.” Bernard Guetta confides not to wait “much” of the emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council scheduled for Sunday at the request of Israel. He believes that Europe “has no more” of levers “than the United States, but not less” neither.
Bernard Guetta, member of the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, says he was not surprised by these strikes carried out by Iran “to the extent that the supreme leader of the Islamic Republic had announced very clearly that there would be a response after the Israeli strike against the Iranian consulate in Damascus” last April 1st. He also recalls that “the American secret services, relayed by the political authorities of the United States, had announced that it was in preparation” and for several days “the Europeans had called on their nationals not to go to the region”.
MEP Renew also believes that it “It would have been extraordinarily difficult for the Iranian regime not to respond to the Israeli attack on their consulate in Damascus, given that a diplomatic enclave is a piece of territory”. “If the Iranian regime did not respond, it would be a colossal admission of weakness”, he says. Bernard Guetta also insists on “the fragility” of the Iranian regime, which he judges “extraordinarily weakened”due in particular to a “rising unpopularity” of his diet “among women and all youth”. He also mentions a “sudden deterioration of the economic situation”with a “inflation on food products [qui] reached heights in Iran”.
