Giants' pair cop one-match bans in costly loss

GWS skipper Toby Greene has been offered a one-game suspension after making high contact with Carlton’s Jordan Boyd during the Blues’ 19-point victory at Marvel Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

On Sunday, match review officer Michael Christian graded Greene’s offence as careless conduct of medium impact and high contract and handed him a one-match ban as punishment.

But the Blues come-from-behind win comes at an even bigger cost for the Giants with two of the side’s key attacking options potentially sidelined for next week — with key forward Jesse Hogan also banned.

In the fourth quarter, Greene leapt into the air in a marking contest, extending his leg and turning his body at the last second as Boyd also left the ground to contest the ball.

The clash saw Greene’s shoulder collide with Boyd’s head after he ran back with the flight of the ball. Boyd was awarded a free kick for the contact.

“You can see [Greene is] originally jumping but then he’s slow getting there and he chooses to protect himself,” Hawthorn legend Jason Dunstall told Fox Footy at the time.

“He’s got his eyes on the ball when he leaves the ground but [they deviate].”

Boyd did not leave the field following the incident and played out the remainder of the match.
