434 thousand newborns were examined by the initiative for early detection of genetic diseases

The Ministry of Health and Population announced the examination of 434,210 newborns, as part of the President of the Republic’s initiative for early detection of genetic diseases in newborns, under the slogan “100 Million Health” since the launch of the initiative on July 13, 2021 until today, with the aim of reaching… To a healthy generation free of causes of disability.

 

Dr. Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, the official spokesman for the Ministry of Health and Population, indicated that the initiative is currently working in its first phase, which aims to detect 19 hereditary diseases. In premature babies, in the incubators of the Ministry of Health and Population hospitals, the second phase is scheduled to include conducting a medical survey of all newborns, in all health units nationwide.  

For her part, Dr. Souad Abdel Majeed, Head of the Healthcare and Nursing Sector, explained that the 19 diseases that are detected include (congenital hypothyroidism, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, bean anemia, high glutaric acid in the blood, High isovaleric acid in the blood, maple urine disease, cystic fibrosis, phenylketonuria, tetrahydropitrin deficiency, high blood tyrosinemia “Type I” high galactose in the blood, high homocysteine ​​in the urine, high arginine in the blood, high citrulline in the blood, ornithine transcarbamoyl deficiency, Fatty acid oxidation, biotinidase deficiency).

 

She added that the examination is done by taking a blood sample from the child’s heel and analyzing it in the laboratories of the Egyptian Center for Disease Control and Prevention. CDC, which is equipped with the latest international equipment in the field of detecting genetic diseases, explaining that in the event of a positive sample, the child will be referred for a confirmatory test for the disease, and begin receiving the necessary treatment “for free.” In accordance with the protocols established by the scientific committee of the initiative.

 

For her part, Dr. Nanis Abdel Mohsen, coordinator of the initiative for early detection of genetic diseases, noted the allocation of 42 centers for the treatment of genetic diseases in newborns, In cooperation with the Supreme Council of University Hospitals of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, these centers are being expanded successively to include all governorates of the Republic, explaining that these centers provide treatment and periodic follow-up services “for free.” For children who suffer from any hereditary diseases, to help them live their lives normally, in addition to providing support and counseling services to parents, to reduce the possibility of having children with any hereditary diseases.

 

Dr. Nanis Abdel Mohsen said that the 42 centers are distributed across the governorates of the Republic, and include (Al-Mahkama Medical Center, Rawd Al-Farag Medical Center, Ain Helwan Medical Center, Old Misr Medical Center, Genetics Clinic at Demerdash Children’s Hospital, Ketogenic Nutrition Clinic in Demerdash, Digestive System Clinic at Children’s Hospital Al-Demerdash, the digestive system and liver clinic at Abu Al-Rish Japanese Hospital, the ketogenic nutrition clinic at Abu Al-Rish Hospital in Cairo Governorate, and the genetic counseling clinic at the Ophthalmia Children’s Hospital, a center at Al-Talaba Hospital, the clinical center for genetics at Smouha Hospital, the ketogenic diet clinic at Smouha Hospital, the metabolic diseases clinic at Smouha Hospital. ) in Alexandria Governorate.

She added that the 42 centers also include (the Ketogenic Diet Clinic at the National Research Center, Sheikh Zayed Medical Center) in Giza Governorate, (the Child Care Center) in Beheira Governorate, and (the Digestive System Clinic at the Children’s Hospital University) in Ismailia Governorate, (Minya Sandoub Medical Center, Mansoura University Children’s Hospital) in Dakahlia Governorate, (Center at Free Misr Hospital, University Hospital) in Minya Governorate, and (Shebin El-Kom Medical Center, Shibin Liver Institute, Shebin El-Kom Health Center) in Minya Governorate.
