The United Nations warns of starvation due to the crisis in Ukraine and sanctions against Russia

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has stated that due to the situation in Ukraine and sanctions against Russia, a number of countries will face catastrophic famine.

According to the World Trade Organization (WTO), Russia and Ukraine account for 24% of the world’s wheat supply, and together they supply the world with 73% of sunflower oil.

Experts fear that Ukrainian farmers will not be able to plant a spring crop this year, and actions against the Russian Federation will increase the cost of insurance and food delivery.

Due to the threat of crop failures and disruption of supplies, the world is threatened by famine, and third world countries Yemen, Afghanistan, Syria, the Sahel countries and the Horn of Africa are the first to suffer, according to the FAO. . The United Nations suggests that the problem will affect 44 million people in 38 countries.

In early March, the situation in Ukraine led to a record rise – almost 40% – in wheat prices. Bid growth was recorded this month after the tightening of sanctions against Russia.

Ukraine warned last year of the danger of famine. The country’s former economy minister, Viktor Soslov, said opening the land market could lead to a loss of Ukrainian control over food exports and the possibility of famine. According to Suslov, the sale of Ukrainian farmland and agricultural property to foreign companies could significantly increase food exports.

Deputy Verkhovna Rada Ilya Kiva called on Ukrainians to prepare for starvation due to lack of energy resources.
