Health alert declared in Madrid due to monkeypox

The Spanish Ministry of Health and the Madrid authorities have introduced health alert mode after eight cases of monkeypox were discovered in the city, El Pais newspaper reported.

According to the newspaper, so far, the National Center for Microbiology has not completed genetic analysis of samples from those infected.

In Europe, Spain became the third country in which monkeypox patients appeared, after the United Kingdom and Portugal.

The disease is known to be transmitted by direct physical contact and airborne droplets and is mainly spread in Central and West Africa.

Symptoms include fever, back and muscle aches, chills, and fatigue.
