American newspaper: The military escalation between Israel and Hezbollah could be disastrous for both sides

The Wall Street Journal warned: The American newspaper on Saturday stressed the danger of the military escalation between Israel and the Lebanese Hezbollah group, stressing that the dramatically escalating conflict could be disastrous for both sides.

The newspaper explained in a report published on its website. The newspaper added that Israel and Hezbollah believe that they can escalate further. The intensity of the conflict between them without provoking a comprehensive war, which threatens a catastrophe, especially since during the last war between the two countries in 2006, Israel then bombed Beirut’s civil airport, and Hezbollah launched missiles deep into Israel. More than 1,100 people were killed in Lebanon, including civilians and fighters. About 120 Israeli soldiers were killed during the war, which included a ground incursion into southern Lebanon, and more than 40 Israeli civilians were also killed.

She indicated that the two sides have strengthened their military forces during nearly two decades. Since then, as Israel has acquired new air defenses and advanced warplanes from the United States, and Hezbollah has acquired new missiles and other weapons from Iran, Hezbollah also has thousands of battle-tested fighters who have supported the Syrian government during the country’s civil war. And a system of tunnels in southern Lebanon that is believed to rival Hamas’s underground network in Gaza.

She continued that Hezbollah had about 150,000 artillery and ballistic missiles in 2015, According to an Israeli estimate, and security analysts believe this number has risen since then, they say Hezbollah is hiding the size of its arsenal while trying to maintain a strategic advantage in any confrontation with Israel.

The newspaper quoted Assaf Orion, a researcher at the Israeli Institute for National Security Studies, as saying: “Since both sides realize that they want to avoid war, they are actually allowing themselves more room for escalation over time.” He added: “As long as the fighting continues in Gaza , Hezbollah will continue its attacks, which enhances the chances of miscalculation.”

She noted that in addition to the war in Gaza, the conflict on the Lebanese-Israeli border has destabilized both countries for several years. Months. Since October 7, Israeli raids have killed at least 276 Hezbollah fighters, and tens of thousands of Lebanese and Israeli civilians have been expelled from their homes. Israeli air strikes have hit the capital, Beirut, where a raid killed a senior Hamas leader last January.

The American newspaper indicated that Israel and Hezbollah have intensified their conflict in recent days, which has increased fears that one of them might miscalculate and lead to a more severe confrontation, and such a scenario could It leads to widespread death and destruction in both Lebanon and neighboring Israel.

The Wall Street Journal reported: Avoiding a large-scale war between Israel and Hezbollah has been a priority for Western governments, including the United States, since the war began, as the US administration sent a senior White House official on several trips to the region in an attempt to calm tensions. Western efforts to separate the two fronts did not succeed.

The newspaper pointed out that Hezbollah is resisting American and French efforts to calm its conflict with Israel while the war in Gaza continues, under the pretext that it needs to put pressure on Israel. To help the Palestinian people during the war.

French Foreign Minister Stephane Ségourny is expected to visit Lebanon this week in an attempt to continue mediation efforts and prevent escalation of the conflict.
